Diseases of Public Health Significance

These diseases are to be reported to the Medical Officer of Health according to the specified timelines, even if diagnosis is only suspect (as per Ontario Regs 559/91 and amendments under the Health Protection and Promotion Act). During business hours (M-F 8:30-4:30), DoPHS must be reported immediately.

Animal bites or scratches must also be reported immediately to public health (as per Ontario Reg 557/90 and amendments under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

Immunization Information

See below for updates to the publicly-funded immunization schedule, the seasonal immunization program, vaccine ordering, as well as school and daycare immunization requirements.

Immunization

Influenza, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines have arrived. All three vaccinations can be co-administered to increase uptake.

The Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule for Ontario determines which vaccines can be offered free of charge in Ontario. It contains the following information:

Prenatal and Postpartum Referrals and Resources

Lakelands Public Health offers a variety of FREE services to pregnant individuals and families with young children that can assist new parents and promote a healthy start for babies and children. Review our programs, referral forms, and resources included below.

The Feeding and Nutrition Clinic helps parents develop skills to feed their baby, child, or themselves. One-on-one appointments can also support parents to make food choices that are best for their family. Our Public Health Nurses or Registered Dietitians can give support in person, online, or over the phone.

The Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) Program is a free, confidential and voluntary program for pregnant women and families with children up to age six. The program provides you with advice and support at various stages to help you give your children the best start in life.

The Infant and Child Development Program (ICDP) is a free home visiting service. Through the program we partner with families to support the growth and development of children, including those with developmental disabilities or at risk of developmental delay.

Eligibility

  • Children from birth to school entry
  • Families seeking support for developmental growth or concerns

Important: The Infant and Child Development Program serves children living in Peterborough City or County only.

The Nurse Family Partnership® (NFP®) Program is a free home visiting program where public health nurses visit young, first-time parents during their pregnancy and the first two years of their child’s life. NFP® can help parents: have a healthy pregnancy, have healthy children, and meet school and/or work goals.

The Pediatric Nutrition Guidelines (Birth to Six Years) for Health Professionals outline evidence-based nutrition and feeding guidelines along with red flags for healthy, full-term infants and children up to 6 years of age.

Designated Officers

The Designated Officer Program helps to support emergency service workers (firefighters, police, paramedics) take the appropriate steps of action when they may have been exposed to a communicable disease in the line of duty. The program also ensures that all agencies of emergency services have an identified Designated Officer who is available to their staff 24/7 to respond and investigate all reported exposures to communicable diseases. The Designated Officer acts as the liaison between the emergency services workers and Lakelands Public Health.
